Introducing The New Giralda Plaza

shopping at grand giralda

Giralda Plaza has undergone a dramatic transformation into a more modern, open-air hotspot. And now, the wait is nearly over! If you’ve enjoyed the Giralda Al Fresco events throughout the summer, they have only been a sneak preview – a mere sample – of what’s to come.

New Places, New Faces

Since construction began last year, the project’s ultimate goal has been to create a new and more pedestrian-friendly locale for people to shop, socialize and dine. These enhancements have added beautiful walkways and a new promenade, but also new shops and eateries.

While some restaurants have remained open during the construction, there are some new places for diners to explore upon the plaza’s opening. One of them is Rice Mediterranean Kitchen, an offshoot of the Rice House of Kabob restaurant in South Miami. It offers a “build your own bowl” style of Mediterranean cuisine with all manner of vegetables, grains, sauces and meats for patrons to experiment with.

A Flexible Future

One of the distinctive features of the redesigned Giralda Plaza is the flexible nature of the streetscaping. At present, and for the next two years, the plaza will be closed off to vehicular traffic, courtesy of removable pylons at either end.

While this was done with the agreement of the businesses on Restaurant Row, the fact that the pylons can be removed – if necessary – ensures that the plaza can be reintegrated as part of Giralda Avenue, as well as allowing for events such as classic car shows or accommodating trucks used to move in equipment for special performances.

With its versatile design, the new Giralda Plaza is built to delight and entertain for years to come.

Grand Opening

The new pedestrian promenade on Giralda Plaza is finally being unveiled on October 13th. Enjoy food and drinks from your favorite Coral Gables staples and live music by Patrick & The Swayzees, Jacob Jeffries, and Spam Allstars. Come enjoy the grand celebration at 7 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the “official” opening of Giralda Plaza.

The event is free and ample parking is available. For alternative transportation options, see our guide to easy and affordable ways to get around the Gables.

Soul on the Mile featuring Yoli Mayor

September 14, 2017 in Homepage, News by admin

Yoli Mayor

Discover The City Beautiful and celebrate its future at the launch of their summer music series: Soul on The Mile brought to you by the Business Improvement District of Coral Gables and Prism Creative Group!

This summer, the McBride Family Plaza opens up for a night of live music under the stars. Sway to the rhythms of powerful musicians like the ever so soulful Yoli Mayor and the beautifully bluesy Soulixer. Take in the savory creations of Coral Gables favorite eateries, and indulge in drinks in a magical atmosphere of community and connection. Peruse pop-ups by neighborhood shops and get to know one of the city’s most historical areas.

Join the fun as the Gables community comes together on Thursday, September 28th at 7 p.m. and bring the Plaza at 150 Miracle Mile to life. Click here to RSVP.

Soul on the Mile Performing Acts

The show, as they say, must go on. Even though the date for our Soul on the Mile event has changed, we’re still looking forward to having an uplifting show for the whole community. Performing for us will be the up-and-coming Yoli Mayor with opening jams by Soulixir. Both acts are native to Florida, and it’ll be a tremendous treat to enjoy watching them perform in our intimate, stylish setting.

Soulixer

Hailing from Cape Coral, Soulixer cites classic soul influences such as James Brown along with modern artists like Mos Def and John Mayer. The band is wonderfully bare bones: a guitar, a bass and a set of drums are all that are needed to crank out their jams. Their particular blend of funk and soul covers a variety of tones, ranging from mellow soul ballads to bouncy funk anthems that get people in the mood to dance even when sitting down. There’s no better band to get the party started.

Yoli Mayor

Yoli Mayor has elevated spirits across the country with her authentic musical talents as a recent semi-finalist on Season 12 of America’s Got Talent. At just 21-years-old, Mayor’s powerful vocals have been compared to celebrated artists such as Adele, Etta James, and Amy Winehouse. Throughout her competition on a national stage, we’ve watched this Cuban-American and Miami native wow audiences with her self-taught abilities to learn music by ear and sing from her heart. Don’t miss the chance to welcome her home to South Florida, as she performs live on stage in Coral Gables.

Music on the Mile

As the shops on the Mile return to normal operations, we are glad to host a free evening getaway to galvanize our community. Come enjoy some of the best in local music, and see for yourself how the newly “streetscaped” Miracle Mile rocks as a concert venue.

We look forward to bringing the funk back to Miami and hope you’ll join us.

Parking is easy and accessible with valet options available. Planning to enjoy a couple drinks after the show? Consider some of the economical Uber alternatives to get around the Gables.

Easy and Affordable Ways to Get Around the Gables

Easy and Affordable Ways to Get Around the Gables - Miracle Mile

With all of the recent changes going on around the Miracle Mile, it’s understandable that people have had to rethink some of their transportation options, but there are many options to help you get around. Here are the few ways you can get to point A to point B:

Trolley

The Coral Gables trolley system has been around since 2003. In that time, it’s reduced congestion in and around downtown Coral Gables by a measurable percentage and become a vital link for people reaching their jobs from residences outside Coral Gables in a fast and efficient manner.

These quick and stylish public transports run in an efficient loop that helps cut down traffic in town by the equivalent of 750 cars every day. If you haven’t had the opportunity yet, hop aboard and take one of the quickest tours around of Coral Gables, completely for free.

Freebee: Get around Downtown Coral Gables

The Freebee service is a recent addition to the transportation options available to Coral Gables residents and visitors, and as the name implies, it’s free to use.  All that’s required is downloading the Freebee app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, installing it on your mobile device and punching in a request to be picked up.

A short time later, one of numerous Freebee electric vehicles shows up and whisks you off to your specified destination.

Metromover

Technically, this isn’t in Coral Gables, but it’s an important tool for getting to Coral Gables, particularly from downtown Miami. The Metromover is an elevated rail system that runs in two loops (one inner, one outer) that can help put people in position to grab a Metrorail train into Coral Gables proper. While the Metrorail leg of the trip will cost some money, the Metromover portion is entirely free.

Coral Gables is working with its neighbors and its residents to help make sure everybody can get around town as quickly as possible without having to drive themselves.

The Colors of Fall

Leaves may not turn in Miami quite the same way that they do in Vermont or New York, but there will be plenty of color to be seen once the summer’s over. This fall, red is going to be big and bold, with single shade outfits for the daring. Making a more subtle but no less aesthetically pleasing signal, browns are going to be making their presence known in both solids and patterns.

Dipping a Toe

For those wanting to adorn their feet with something new, some designers are reaching back to classic antiquity for stylish takes on Greco-Roman “gladiator” sandals, lacing up to the knee while allowing the toes to peek out. But if those are too much work, basic thong sandals will be getting the haute couture treatment, elevating the “flip-flop” from foam rubber and PVC poolwear to stylish leathers and feathers for a night on the town.

Go Big and Go Out

Despairing at the thought of fitting into skinny jeans? Fear not, because those days are over. Fall is turning the trend in a new direction with extra wide denim (not quite bellbottoms), allowing for easy movements and a little flourish with every step. In tandem with the move to bigger pants, big belts are also going to be coming into style, whether it’s on denim, around a mid-length skirt, or cinching up a flashy new coat.

The fall fashion trends of 2017 look to be a mixture of old school cool and classic comfort for any locale that one might find themselves in. These styles, along with some handpicked pieces uniquely suited for life in Miami, will all be on display at the Beauty & Fashion Event on Miracle Mile. Mark your calendars and prepare to reorganize your closets.
