The most precious secret in Coral Gables is the Coral Gables Art Cinema. Ideally, of course, it wouldn’t be a secret at all, but a place everyone has visited and experienced – but it still feels like a bit of secret for now.

If you haven’t been to the Coral Gables Art Cinema, you’re missing out on a quaint and lovely arts experience just across the street from Books & Books in Aragon, the Gables’ cultural hub. The Cinema is a one-room art house cinema where they screen everything from oldie favorites (last week they showed Casablanca!), and up-and-coming international filmmakers.

I can fondly recall a few of my favorite experiences (all made a bit better by the gourmet snack bar and craft beer and wine): a new little romantic comedy with Jane Fonda and Catherine Keener (Peace, Love & Misunderstanding), the original Godzilla in Japanese (a must watch!) and a press screening on a weekday morning of the uncharacteristically slapstick I’m So Excited by Spanish film icon Pedro Almodovar.

The Coral Gables Art Cinema has an eclectic programming schedule featuring something for everyone – including the cinephiles in the making. There are regular kids and family screenings to introduce the little ones to fine cinema.

I’ve always wanted an excuse to rent out the theater for a private event, but nothing’s fallen into my lap yet. The space is available for private rentals at a very affordable cost and features 114 seats and an on-site gallery. For now, I’ll keep brainstorming an excuse and visiting the Coral Gables Art Cinema as a regular patron and keep spreading the word about this wonderful little secret in our community.
