Gables Bites: Lunch is Back at The Local!

By: Patricia Guarch Wise of MIAMI NICE

I’ve always dreamed of having a place where they ask me if I want “the usual.” You know, a real Cheers-like local spot. The Local is probably as close as I’m going to get – and I have to say, it’s pretty darn close.

I’m a regular face at their Friday Happy Hour. I walk over mid-week for a craft beer after a long day (or a yoga class) and get a warm greeting from the familiar faces of their staff. I can check one lifelong goal off my list.

When they change the menu, I’m quick to notice – which is why I’m happy to fill you all in about the return of their lunch menu. The menu features a few of the dinner-time favorites, like the very delicious and filling burger and the same bar snacks as always, but there’s a new selection of “hand held” sandwiches and soups and salads.

It’s like the chef crawled into my mind and put together a short list of things I love – egg salad sandwiches, BLT on rye and a radicchio salad with white anchovies and vaca frita.

If you can’t make it over for lunch, you won’t miss out on all the fun; the dinner menu has also received an overhaul. Bay Scallops and Country Ham with a celery + pearl pasta casserole and cream of saffron are a new main plate. Zellwood Corn Sauteed with Chili & Truffled Mousse is a new side. They’re experimenting a bit with their much beloved cheese plates (at least much beloved by me, it’s a Friday evening habit that I just can’t break) and have added some adventurous new items like a parmesan custard that’s so good I hope it earns a more permanent place on the menu.

Be sure to look our for their series of beer pairing dinners, which have been making a comeback too. The next one is set for this Saturday the 18th and is a four course dinner featuring Biscayne Boulevard Brewing Co.
