Gables Bites: Wine Tasting Recap at La Taberna Giralda

la taberna wine dinnerBy Patricia Guarch Wise

There’s a lot to be impressed by at La Taberna Giralda, but the owners- a grandparent-aged couple were sitting at the bar, chatting, laughing and drinking wine until almost midnight win the top prize. The family ambiance at La Taberna is palpable; their daughter Karen walks from table to table greeting her regulars, joins in an enthusiastic song of Happy Birthday and chats with my date and I about the menu and cleaning her closet.

This is my ideal night.

There are courses and courses of Spanish favorites flowing from the kitchen. Crostini with roasted peppers and anchovies, black rice with calamari, pork tenderloin medallions with crispy fried shoestring potatoes and then an ultra-tender lamb dish in a tomato-based sauce. Every course, a sommelier specializing in Spanish wines comes and educates us a bit, in a lovely Galician accent, about Spain’s surprising wine production. Did you know you can have a glass of Spanish Malbec?

I gossip with my friend. We drink four glasses of wine and guise our overindulgence by talking about how much we’re learning about Spanish wine! A string of overhead lights turn on and suddenly, we might as well be on a vacation in Spain, but we’re just blocks from my house in Coral Gables.

The food is savory and delicious, it’s no frills Spanish food cooked homestyle but is still presented in a modern way.  Just when we think we can’t eat anymore, two little pots of Crema Catalana appear infront of us and we have to eat it; I don’t want to be rude, you know?

Next time, I’ll come visit on flamenco night. A couple more glasses of wine and I’m sure I could be a very, very good flamenco dancer.
