Gables Bites: Restaurant Week Spotlight on Ortanique

_MG_5674By Patricia Guarch Wise of MIAMI NICE

Ortanique isn’t the kind of food that fits neatly into any category. It isn’t Italian or French, pan-Latin or funky fusion. It’s Caribbean food; but it’s more than that – Chef Cindy Hutson and Delius Shirley actually had to coin a phrase to describe their food of the tropics: “Cuisine of the Sun.”

Located right next to the Actor’s Playhouse, Ortanique is a colorful and sunny restaurant.

This Coral Gables Restaurant Week participant is doing their own thing, as usual. Plan on visiting for a taste of rotating daily dishes on the pre-fixe menu including appetizers like Pat’s Caicos Island Conch & Corn Fritters (With Scallions, Holland & Scotch Bonnet Peppers, Red Onion, Kalik Beer and Roasted Pepper Coulis) and entrees including Jerked Single Pork Chop (With Guava Bacardi Spiced Rum Sauce and South American Moros Topped with Drunken Raisins Tropical Fruit Flambé). Go ahead and read that all back because I’m sure you’ve never read anything like it, and you surely haven’t tasted anything like it. Unless you’ve dined at Ortanique that it.

Once the Restaurant Week special has worked it’s magic and you’re ready for more, check out their special Coral Gables Restaurant Week Iron Chef cooking class this Saturday, June 14th at 11am. Still waiting to book your summer vacation? Consider Harbour Island or Grand Cayman where Hutson and Shirley run Ortanique’s sister kitchens. You can even enter their 15th anniversary sweepstakes to win a weekend trip to one of these tropical locations (when you dine 3 times or more through July 1st). So yeah, you know where we’ll be eating these next few weeks.
