What’s the name of that new place everyone is buzzing about? Pete’s Authentic Cooking, a little spot that just opened early April. It’s quickly becoming known for its French pastries, grilled corn soup and chorizo sandwiches made with arugula and a special recipe pineapple- tomato jam, especially, along with chocolate-chili brownies, custom salads and fresh-made smoothies.

Taking over the space at 153 Giralda Avenue where Diane’s Kitchen was slated to be, Pete’s is the creation of Executive Director/Owner Pierre Bensa, a man who’s passion is “starting with a simple idea and watching it grow,” says his daughter, Clémentine, who also helps with the restaurant’s marketing and communications. [Her mother, Sophie, is also part- owner, and is the creative force behind the restaurant’s cozy door.] Bensa is from Southwest France and his family lived in a suburb of Paris before relocating to open Pete’s.

Though he owned a successful little bistro in Paris and got bitten by the restaurant bug, Bensa isn’t a chef. However he helped develop an incredible menu for Pete’s, ranging from market items to catering platters to grab-and-go selections. According to Legros, all items are “fresh, healthy and authentic” and, we say, most importantly, tasty.

For now, Pete’s is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and serves breakfast, lunch, snacks and treats, but folks can also pick up prepared items for dinner and the space can be rented out for events. There’s also a market, offering beer and wines, tea infusers and amazing looseleaf teas, Freakin’ Flamingo jams and Pete’s homemade jams.

Stop by and check it out soon. After all, what’s more neighborly than helping a small family business grow?
