Gables Bites: Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo isn’t Mexico’s Independence Day, for those of you who thought otherwise. It’s is a tribute to the 1862 Batalla de Puebla in which Mexico defeated Napoleon III’s French army, instilling an unprecedented sense of pride in the Mexican people. And here’s something else you should know: Talavera, the Coral Gables’ favorite recently named a Best Mexican Restaurant in the United States by Travel + Leisure, will spin your sombrero all month long in May with a special al a carte menu premiering new items. Selections include Tlacoyos Azules, blue corn tortillas topped with salsa roja taquera, white onion, cilantro, cream and queso añejo; enchiladas de mole poblano (chocolate and peppers–yum!); and Mixiote de Camaron, a “beggar’s bag” stuffed with shrimp, guajillo pesto, poblano peppers and corn. Executive Chef Oscar del Rivero, a native of Mexico City, created the menu with a nod to traditional Mexican ingredients and cooking methods.

And here’s the perfect beverage to wash it down: a cool margarita! If you haven’t already, try Talavera’s margarita sampler during weekday happy hours, 6-9PM, all month long, too. It comes with six miniature margaritas of your choosing, including the French Margarita with Chambord (specially created for Cinco de Mayo), the Hibiscus Margarita with hibiscus tea and agave, or the Spicy Coconut Mezcal Margarita with crema de coco and chile de arbol.

Reservations are suggested and live entertainment will be available for guests’ enjoyment May 3-5. And don’t forget that sombrero!
