Gables Bites: Breakfast in the Gables

By Riki Altman

Everyone knows we have a wealth of restaurants offering sublime dinners, power lunches and even happy hours, but let’s not forget about what many consider the most important meal of the day: breakfast! Many locals already know we’ve got a number of great eateries open just after the sun rises, but here’s a list to help you decide where you’d like to fuel your engine.

You’ve heard French women don’t get fat? That’s most likely because they start their day with petit déjeuner at La Provence: coffee, and fresh-baked bread with jam and butter. If calories are of no concern, however, go for the breakfast croissant with eggs, ham and cheese.

Java lovers, rejoice! Pasión del Cielo invites guests to choose their coffee’s country of origin, then they can decide how they want it prepared while admiring the case full of grab-and-go items. (Personally, we’re big fans of the muffins.)

If you like variety, Sacha’s Café is the place to go. One day you can go for oatmeal with honey and cinnamon, then a danish and coffee the next day, then perhaps an empanada and pastel de guava… you catch the drift.

Chocolate Fashion is always jammed on Saturday and Sunday mornings, but people may not realize that they can enjoy the same delicious meals (brioche French toast, Spanish omelettes, quiche, etcetera) on weekdays starting at 7 a.m.

And there’s always Denny’s, always a favorite especially among the kiddie set, known for its fluffy pancakes, crispy bacon and fresh-brewed coffee. There’s no hour too late or too early to dine here—it’s open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Seeking a quick bite to go? Starbucks and Einstein Bagels, located right next door to each other, pack the perfect one-two punch. And there’s always Panera Bread on the north side of Miracle Mile, with its sweet and savory offerings. We also recommend stopping at Nahuen (aka Patagonia) for espressos and some sweet treats from the pastry case. Just be sure to save room for lunch.
