Gables Bites: Stay Lean in 2013

By Riki Altman

Starting off the new year by making healthful eating decisions can be easy, especially if you frequent the many amazing restaurants Coral Gables has to offer.

The most obvious choice would be fresh greens for starters. Have you seen the selection at Giardino Gourmet Salads? You won’t feel the sacrifice once you swallow a forkful of hand-tossed lettuce with veggies and all those great fixins. Ask for one of the gourmet selections or hand-pick a creation to your liking.

For grab-and-go types, you can find delicious sandwiches, wheat paninis, salads and great homemade soups (we love the carrot-ginger and lentil-roasted garlic, especially)—at Sacha’s Cafe. And they change the menu weekly to avoid palate boredom.

If you have time to sit and relax while indulging, take in the scenery at Books & Books Café. Menu items include tofu and wild mushroom stir-fry, a papaya-pineapple and grilled chicken cilantro wrap and a vegetarian patty melt. Plus, dining alone there is never uncomfortable since hundreds of books and magazines are at your fingertips. And there’s always Seasons 52 which prides itself on its entire menu of options weighing in at 475 calories or less (even desserts!). Click here to see the nutritional breakdown of their selections.

Ah, and let’s not forget about your sweet tooth. Cocolimon, which—blessedly—is open until 10 p.m. on weeknights and 11 on Fridays and Saturdays, offers a wide selection of low-fat, low-cal and even sugar-free frozen yogurt flavors and toppings (some are gluten free, too, and most contain no high fructose corn syrup) that won’t make you miss a scoop of rocky road smothered in marshmallow goo. Once you squeeze back into those skinny jeans you’ll realize it was all worth it.

Here’s to a happy, healthful 2013!
