Gables Bites: Giralda Under the Stars

12/25/12

By Riki Altman

We know, we know. It’s only Christmas and we’re already talking about January 4th. But there’s good reason to mark that special date in your calendar, since Giralda Under the Stars will be back again!

This exciting event, held on the first Friday of every month from 7 p.m. until midnight, brings out the best of many worlds: great cuisine, beautiful weather and camaraderie.

Alex Adams, a Coral Gables resident and urban design planner for the City of Miami says he has been to Giralda Under the Stars nearly a half-dozen times because, as he explains, it is “a family friendly event that is great for meeting other friends. My wife and I live only a block away, so we usually walk out the door and just pick a restaurant based on what we may want to eat that night. We have eaten at just about every restaurant on Giralda and Miracle Mile.”

More than a dozen eateries participate monthly, including Bangkok Bangkok II (Thai), Castelluccio Ristorante (Italian), Costazul (Peruvian fusion), Doggi’s (Latin American), La Dorada (Spanish), Las Vegas (Cuban), Miss Saigon Bistro (Vietnamese), Spizzigo Ristorante (Italian), Spris (Italian) and Talavera (Mexican). The Local and The Bar, two of the city’s favorite watering holes, also join in the fun.

“We always have a beer on draft,” explains The Bar’s Melissa Morales. “And we put tables outside and offer the same food menu we always do.” The bartender says her spot has been a family favorite since it opened in 1946, but Giralda Under the Stars is making it more popular than ever.

Folks who plan to enjoy Giralda Under the Stars might also want to stop at Costazul to see what’s on the menu. Chef Olenka Riglos, who hails from Lima, says they offer specials on Peruvian cervezas like Cusqueña and Cristal, along with two-for-ones on wine. Also look for diners’ favorites pulled from the menu, like octopus a la parilla, salmon ceviches and seafood fajitas. Special desserts are also prepared just for diners enjoying their dinners al fresco.

Come casual or dressy, early or late, alone or with friends but, whatever you do, come hungry.
