New Art Cinema Coming To Downtown Gables

Film lovers will soon have another venue to check out the latest cultural showings: the bottom floor of Garage 2 at 250 Aragon Avenue, will be converted into an art cinema. The City Commission approved the project, giving the go ahead to begin the construction of a multipurpose auditorium that will seat 144 patrons in a venue for film screenings, film festivals, lectures, book readings and other cultural events.

Construction cost for the new cultural hub is $650,000 which will pay for the wall insulation, flooring finishes, stairs, electrical, lighting and plumbing work, as well as a new ticket window. The city has donated $250,000 to cover construction costs. The city is counting on an additional $250,000 donation pledged from the Harry and Mary Perrin, Fund subject to the renaming of the building’s front entrance as the Perrin Plaza. Additionally, Steve and Midge Krams have donated $35,343. The space has been leased to Coral Gables Cinemateque Inc., a non-profit (501C3 Tax Exempt) charitable organization in charge of managing the art cinema. The difference in costs will be raised by the Cinemateque through corporate contributions and support. Currently, the Cinemateque is a recipient of donations from various commercial companies covering items such as seating, acoustical wall treatments, screens, and concession equipment.
