CORAL GABLES, FL – August 1, 2007 – Ten years since its inception to revitalize Miracle Mile, the Business Improvement District (BID) of Coral Gables proudly announces its re-election victory by a majority of its property owners, 105 yes votes out of a total of 125 votes cast.   BID property owners voted to retain the special assessment district in a mail ballot election held July 1-30th to re-new the organization’s charter, which expires every five years due to a sunset provision.

Responsible for advocacy and marketing “Downtown Coral Gables,” and organizer of signature events such as “Battle of the Chefs,” Halloween on the Mile and “Flamingos in the Gables”, the BID of Coral Gables encompasses all retail and commercial property located within the geographic area bounded by Douglas to LeJeune Roads (east – west) and Aragon to Andalusia Avenues (north – south). This re-election cycle added Giralda Avenue and its famed “Restaurant Row” to be included within the district boundaries, which now runs north-south from Giralda to Andalusia.

“Through our marketing and advocacy initiatives, the BID has had much success within the last five years, such as an increase in occupied merchant space, diversification of the retail mix, creation of a successful centralized valet parking system, award winning cooperative advertising programs, and much more.” says Mari Molina, Executive Director of the Coral Gables BID. “We look forward to creating far reaching programs, adding our neighbors to the North on Giralda to our efforts, and striving for even better partnerships with the City, the Chamber of Commerce and other entities to continue the success of Downtown Coral Gables.”

During its upcoming term, the BID will run under a lower assessment structure tied to ground floor square footage instead of assessed property values, thereby minimizing the burden to property owners while maintaining the effectiveness of the BID. The expanded geographical area provides an economy of scale, spreading the BID cost across a wider footprint.  The assessment will be $0.435 on Miracle Mile and $0.348 for properties located off Miracle Mile.

The BID is dedicated to the improvement of downtown Coral Gables by promoting the area as a vibrant place to live, work, shop, dine, and visit. Through its many advertising and marketing programs, the BID promotes its member stores and restaurants, raising the neighborhood’s retail, dining, and entertainment profile. Retail and dining directories, advertisements in national and local magazines, advertising newspaper co-ops, outdoor billboards, cable TV commercials, a busy website: www.shopcoralgables.com, and maps are just some of the BID-produced materials designed to draw patrons to downtown Coral Gables. In the last two years, the BID generated almost 50 million gross media impressions through paid and unpaid (editorial) media.
